Today I am writing a blog post about Australia Day. January 26th is a day of celebration for all Aussies of the arrival of the European First Fleet in Australia. But recently there has been some debate about whether the government should change the date of Australia Day because apparently it is “disrespectful” to Aboriginals if we have nation-wide celebrations on the day that we invaded the Aboriginals.
Some Aboriginals are even calling the celebration “Invasion day” and hold protests for the government to change the date, some councils have even cancelled Australia Day celebrations in respect for the Aboriginals.
I think that it is unnecessary to change the date of Australia Day, as it has been on January 26th since 1935, but perhaps instead of changing the date, we could still continue our celebrations, but somehow recognize how the Aboriginals might of felt, and show a sign of respect.
I always go to my Aunt’s house for Australia Day, and I think that I for one, will make a cake in the colours of the Aboriginal flag to remember them and say sorry to them.
